1957 was the year that inaugurated Dwight D. Eisenhower’s second term as President of the United States, the same year that saw Elvis’ popularity massive growth and the signature of the Civil Rights Act, that ensured all Americans their right to vote. In such a time of change GM underwent a major re-design with underslung ‘cow belly’ frames and largely elegant styling that represented a progression from what had gone before, traditional keynotes being kept. Oldsmobile shared an industry first with Buick and Rambler in having pillarless station wagons although the three-piece back window on sedans and coupes was not universally welcomed. 1958’s offerings would make the public grateful for what had gone before.
